Class Requirements

  • You must bring proof of all shots and nasal bordatella to the first class. Nasal bordatella must have been given 2 weeks prior (bordatella is good for one year) to the start of class to have time to be effective.

  • You must be at least 15 years old to handle a dog in training class. 

  • Collars and leashes will be available for sale at the Humane Society. 

  • In order to guarantee a place in class, payment MUST be received at time of sign up.

  • CLASSES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE due to limited class sizes.

  • Notices of closings will be made on WBKV 92.5 FM (147.0 AM) in West Bend and on WTKM 104.9 FM in Hartford.

Basic Dog Handling
Dogs 5 Months and Up

This class is open to new dogs and graduates of Puppy Class. Here you will work towards perfecting your handling skills, basic manners, and learn new exercises. Long line foundation exercises, proper leash walking/heeling, sit, down, come, and stay are covered.  In addition to these basic obedience exercises, we cover topics such as problem solving and learning to think like our dogs. You will have the opportunity to proof your dog mid distractions. Open forum for dog related topics and problem solving.

Advanced Obedience & Agility Foundation Class

Must have previous basic training. Advanced Obedience will cover exercises to prepare you and your dog for CGC certification. We will also work on perfecting the skills you've already learned and challenging your dog with distractions and distance work. Agility Foundations is for dog & handler teams new to the sport of agility. Prepare to have fun and strengthen the bond you have with your dog.

Learn the "lingo" of agility, teach your dog to run through a tunnel, to weave through a set of poles, direct your dog over a sequence of jumps and much more!

Creating a Calm Dog

This is a one-on-one session, in your home or at the shelter to curb unwanted behavior. Help with barking, lunging, pulling, nipping, etc.
Dealing with behavior problems.

Canine Good Citizenship Testing (CGC)

WCHS is now offering “Canine Good Citizen” testing, sponsored by the American Kennel Club.  Do you have a well trained, well behaved canine?  Do you want to enroll in the WCHS Pet-A-Pet Therapy program?  Sign up now to become a certified Canine Good Citizen (to learn more about the CGC program, check out www.akc.org)  Successful completion of advanced dog handling class preferred.

Puppy Class
Puppies 8 weeks to 4 months

Geared towards first time dog owners so they can begin their journey prepared for the road ahead. Introduce your puppy to basic manners and obedience commands, such as, sit, stay, come, and more, as well as methods to teach them these commands. Discussion topics include typical puppy behavior as your puppy grows and matures and what you can do to avoid unwanted behaviors or correct them. Your puppy will have the opportunity to interact with others, increase their confidence, and improve their social behaviors.
(Thursday class offers confidence course equipment.)

Puppy and Basic Combined

This class is open to puppies and dogs. The class is constructed to introduce your puppy to basic manners and to proof your dog amid distractions. The discussion topics include: typical puppy and dog behavior and problem solving. Obedience training and agility training are introduced in this class.

Reactive Dog Class

Do you have a reactive dog? Does he or she go ballistic when they see another dog? Are you afraid they will bite someone?

This class is done on a one-on-one basis and needs consecutive training days to be successful. Positive reinforcement, learning how to read your dog’s body language, and “abandonment” training methods are used. Please call to see if your dog would be a good candidate for this class.

Duration 5-10 classes (determined once your dog is assessed and a program is designed)
